What is a breathable film? Why is it used in sanitary pads and diapers?

Breathable film is an eco-friendly, functional polyolefin film that allows the passage of water vapor while blocking liquids, pathogens, and dust. Typically produced by blending PE resin with calcium carbonate masterbatch and subjecting the mixture to a stretching process, it develops uniform, tortuous microporous channels around the particles; it is widely used in hygiene products such as sanitary napkins and diapers.
Its functionality relies on the dual nature of its microporous structure: a humidity gradient facilitates bidirectional water vapor flow, ensuring breathability and moisture wicking, while the high aspect ratio of the micropores—leveraging capillary action—blocks liquid water. By precisely controlling micropore diameter and film thickness, manufacturers can balance water pressure resistance with breathability, meeting the essential requirements for hygiene products: preventing leakage while avoiding a stuffy, humid feel.
Breathable film is primarily manufactured using either blown film or cast film processes. Key production controls focus on raw material ratios, dehumidification, thickness, stretching, and heat treatment, with finished products undergoing testing for critical metrics such as water vapor transmission rate and water pressure resistance. Application requires prioritizing liquid-tight integrity while optimizing product design to maximize the benefits of breathability.
Regarding printing, flexography is the preferred method for breathable films. It is well-suited to the film's characteristics—specifically its thinness, limited strength, and the susceptibility of micropores to damage. Flexography employs gentle pressure that avoids clogging pores or compromising the breathable structure; furthermore, it offers excellent ink compatibility, uniform printing, and a refined finish, thereby meeting the production requirements for hygiene products that are lightweight, aesthetically pleasing, and fully functional.
